Tokio Hotel interview with Oliver Tanson- Esch, Luxembourg 22.02.2010

Bill: Wir sind extrem aufgeregt. Also, wir sind extrem nervös immer und das geht auch nie vorbei. Ich glaub’, das gehört dazu so. Ganz klar, man ist immer nervös, wenn man auf die Bühne geht und so wie man halt drauf steht und anfängt, so dann entspannt man sich auf der Bühne eigentlich relativ schnell und hat eigentlich nur noch Spaß. Aber davor, muss man sagen, sind wir extrem nervös.

We’re extremely nervous. Meaning, we’re always extremely nervous and that also doesn’t go away. I think it’s just part of it. Of course, one is always nervous when walking on stage and as soon as one stands on it and begins then one relaxes relatively quickly on stage and actually just has fun. However, one has to say that we’re extremely nervous prior to that.

Bill: Der große Unterschied ist halt dies’ Mal, dass wir ’ne ganz eigene Bühne mithaben. Ja also, das macht eigentlich den Unterschied. Wenn man halt ’ne Bühne nimmt vor Ort, die vor Ort ist, so, dann, dann spart man das natürlich, wenn man die nich’ hin und her fahren muss. Und wir haben dies’ Mal aber ’ne ganz eigene Bühne mit. Von daher ist das halt ’n bisschen aufwendiger alles.

This time the big difference is that we’ve got our very own stage with us. Well yes, that’s basically what makes the difference. If one uses the local stage, like, the one at the venue, then, of course, it saves [money] when one doesn’t have to drive it here and there. And this time we’ve got our very own stage with us though. Therefore it’s all just a bit more elaborate.

Bill: Ich stand früher als ich echt noch ziemlich jung war, also so mit sieben, acht Jahren stand ich halt auch bei Nena-Konzerten und so weiter, im Regen und hab’ gewartet und so. Also, auf jeden Fall.

Back in the day when I really still was quite young, like with seven, eight years, I was also standing at Nena concerts and so on, in the rain while I was waiting and so on. Meaning, definitely.

Tom: Ich und Georg, wir haben, wir haben ja irgendwie in der letzten Albumproduktionsphase – das war ja fast ’n Jahr – haben wir uns mal zwei Wochen frei genommen und, und sind mit ’nem Zelt vor Jessica Albas, erm, Haus vorbei gekommen und haben uns da ’n bisschen niedergelassen. Nee, sie hat kein Konzert gegeben. Sie hat auch die Tür nich’ aufgemacht, erm, von daher war das nich’ so erfolgreich, aber das sind so kleine Sachen, die man dann schon macht.

During the last phase of our album production – which took almost a year – I and Georg, we took, we just took 2 weeks off and, and passed by Jessica Alba’s house with a tent and settled down. Nah, she didn’t give a concert. She also didn’t open the door, erm, so therefore it wasn’t much of a success but those are just the little things one happens to do.

Bill: Tom und ich gerade kennen das auch nicht anders, ja? Wir sind so aufgewachsen. Wir haben schon mit ganz jungen Jahren unglaublichen Hass auch in älteren Leuten hervorgebracht. Von daher… Das ist auch so’ne Sache, die wir auch eher genossen haben als das es schlimm für uns war und man muss auch sagen, wir wären auch nicht da wo wir jetzt sind, wenn wir die nicht gehabt hätten, die Hater. Also, von daher… Eigentlich sind wir da ganz dankbar.

Especially Tom and I also don’t know it any differently, yes? We grew up like that. We’ve evoked tremendous hatred in elderly people as well when we were still very young. Therefore… It’s also one of those things that we enjoyed more than it was bad for us and one also has to say that we wouldn’t be where we are now if we hadn’t had them, the hater. So, therefore… Actually we’re quite grateful for it.

Bill: Normal hassen uns die Leute oder sie finden’s halt richtig gut so und was dazwischen gibt’s eigentlich selten und von daher… Also, Tom und ich sind so groß geworden. Also auch, als wir keine Musik gemacht haben. Wir brauchten nur in ’n Schulbus steigen und da war dasselbe los. Also von daher, erm… ist das eigentlich ’ne Sache, die, die auch total Routine für uns ist.

Usually people hate us or they just really like it and so on and there’s actually rarely anything in-between and therefore… Well, Tom and I grew up like that. Meaning, also when we weren’t making any music. All we had to do was get on the school bus and the same thing was happening on there. So therefore, erm… it’s actually a thing that we totally got used to.

Bill: Gute Frage! Wie kann man als Musiker heut’ noch Geld verdienen?! Das is’… schwer, muss man sagen.

Good question! How can one still earn money being a musician nowadays?! That is… difficult, one has to say.

Tom: Wir haben eigentlich ’n ähnliches Problem, weil wir, erm, für die Produktion sozusagen auf Tour natürlich auch so viel Geld ausgeben, dass wir auch am Ende des Tages mit so’ner Tour natürlich kein, kein richtiges Geld mehr verdienen und CDs werden auch immer weniger.

We’ve actually got a similar problem because, erm, of course we’re spending so much money for the production on tour as it is so of course we’re not really earning any money with such a tour anymore and CDs are also getting less and less all the time.

Bill: Also, Georg geht nebenbei noch anschaffen, an den Off-Tagen. *laughs* Der stellt sich dann noch mal an die Straße, so.

So, additionally Georg has to prostitute himself on off days. *laughs* So he’s, like, walking the street as well.

Georg: Bill ist mein bester Kunde, übrigens.
Bill is my best customer, by the way.

Bill: Genau. *laughs* Exactly. *laughs*

Bill: Ich glaube, gerade für so Newcomer-Leute ist es halt echt scheiße. Also, heute, heutzutage noch an ’nen Plattendeal zu kommen, der gut ist und, und als Künstler echt noch seinen großen Durchbruch zu schaffen, das wird, glaube ich, immer schwieriger, weil die Leute natürlich auch nichts mehr investieren. Also, wenn ich unsere eigene beschissene Plattenfirma angucke, dann…

I think it’s really just sh*t, especially for, like, newcomer guys. Meaning, to get a record deal that’s good and, and to still get your big breakthrough as an artist these days. I think that it’s getting harder and harder because people don’t invest anything anymore, of course. Well, when I’m looking at our own sh*t record label, then…

Tom laughs: Ja, genau. Yes, exactly.
Bill: … kann… wissen wir das.
… [we] can… we know about that.

Bill: Wir können jetzt gerade natürlich von den letzten fünf Jahren sprechen, wenn man sich dann die Plattenbranche anguckt, dann, erm, sitzen da viele, viele alte Männer bei den Plattenfirmen, die vor ihrem Schreibtisch weinen, auf jeden Fall. Also, es geht ordentlich nach unten. Also, das kann man echt ganz gut verfolgen über die letzten fünf Jahre.

Of course we can talk about the last five years especially, so when one has a look at the record industry, then, erm, there are definitely many, many old men sitting in front of their desk crying at the record labels. Meaning, it’s proper going downhill. Meaning, it’s really been easy to follow [the matter] over the past five years.

Tom: Wann hat man Platin gekriegt, vor 10 Jahren in Deutschland? Das waren wahrscheinlich so 2 Millionen Platten oder so was?
When did one receive Platinum [records] in Germany 10 years ago? That was probably with, like, two million [sold] records or something?
Bill: Wahrscheinlich, ja.
Probably, yes.
Tom: Jetzt ist, glaube ich, Platin bei 200.000, ne? Oder so was.
I think, now Platinum lies at 200,000, right? Or something like that.

Tom: Wir haben auch den Fehler gemacht… Was heißt „den Fehler gemacht“? Ich würd’s wahrscheinlich immer wieder so machen. Wir haben jetzt auch nie irgendwelche Sachen gemacht zu irgendwie, erm, irgendwelche Werbeverträge oder irgendwas, wo wir gesagt haben „So, komm. Lass uns das mal machen, damit, damit wir irgendwie Kohle abholen.“ oder „Lass uns doch noch ’n Tokio Hotel-Lutscher rausbringen.“ Oder so was. Wir haben echt immer drauf geachtet, dass es irgendwie… Ja, dass wir da komplett dahinter stehen können, so. Und haben uns eigentlich echt so eher auf unsere Touren, auf unsere Alben konzentriert und haben eigentlich so nebenher, also, alles, alles liegen lassen was man so liegen lassen kann.

We also made the mistake… What’s to say “made the mistake”? I’d probably always do it the same way over and over again. Somehow we’ve never done some things like, erm, some advertising contracts or something, like, where we were saying “Well, come on. Let’s just do it so that, so that we can make some cash somehow.” or “Let’s just release a Tokio Hotel Lollipop.” Or something like that. We really always took care of it somehow [being]… Yes, that we could, like, totally approve of it. And actually we’ve really focused more on our tours, on our albums and at the same time we actually left everything, everything behind that could be left behind.

Bill: Was wünschen wir…? Wir wünschen uns nach Asien auf jeden Fall als nächstes zu gehen. Wir wünschen uns…
What we wish for…? We definitely wish to go to Asia next. We wish for…
Tom: [das] Leute wieder Platten kaufen und die Musikindustrie wieder aufblüht. *laughs*
[That] people buy records again and that the music industry flourishes again. *laughs*
Bill: Genau. Wir wünschen uns weniger illegale Downloads für alle.
Exactly. We wish for less illegal downloads for everybody.

Okay… okay… bearable.

*”supi” is an abbreviation of “super” which makes it sound a bit more playful, childish, cute.

О концерте в Гонконге

There was a rumour that talk about a possible Tokio Hotel concert in Hong Kong next 22th September. Universal Hong Kong says:

"We don't know yet the source of this rumour. But, after recive a mail talking about this rumour we checked the Tokio Hotel schedule and there isn't any date in Hong Kong.

We are so sorry for it.

We will follow all the advertising deals and will contact with you as soon as we have news."
