»We never felt normal«
A "Diamond Record" in France, a Newcomer-Prize at the MTV Video Music Awards in L.A., four Awards at the MTV Latin Music Awards in Mexico. The success story of Tokio Hotel, in the past two years, is an unprecedented one for a German band. On October 2nd their third Album "Humanoid" will be released. MOPO talked with the identical twins Tom (Guitar, 20) and Bill Kaulitz (Vocals, 20).


MOPO: People generally say that androgynous pop stars are liked by young girls, because they're not dangerous to them. Are you safe, Bill?

Bill Kaulitz: I don't know, but it could be. On the other hand a lot of people also say, that women like assholes. And yes, I always notice that it works for my brother. (grins)

MOPO: Do you see yourself as an asexual being on stage or as an animalistic performing Frontman?

Bill Kaulitz: I, myself, am not thinking about this at the moment. But a lot of other people think about me this way, just because there aren't any amourous storys of me in the press because of the fact that they just didn't happen. I didn't have a girlfriend or a sexual relationship the whole time. That's probably why people think about it that way.

MOPO: In the media you already got compared to Michael Jackson, Victoria Beckham and Boy George. Which is the worst comparison?

Bill Kaulitz: The worst one is definitely Victoria Beckham! Even though I don't think that she's lousy - I just can't comprehend this comparison. I can understand the comparison with Michael Jackson and Boy George, because they also wore make-up. But I think those are the only parallels. People tell me that there were a lot of Rockbands and "real men" in the 80's, which were ten years older than me, had crimped hair and wore make-up. Hence, I didn't even invent it.

MOPO: Did you watch your mother a lot when she stood in front of the mirror or where does this (habit of putting make-up on) come from?

Bill Kaulitz: No, absolutely not. My mother actually runs around without make-up. I just always had this enthusiasm for vampires.

MOPO: How much share does your hair have on Tokio Hotel's success?

Bill Kaulitz: I think a pretty large one, it's a combination: Outfit, Styling, the personality and Music. It would be strange to continue making music without the Styling.

Tom Kaulitz: But it's just a combination, when it's real. There are a lot of artists, and I'm not a fan of them, who dress up just for the stage, and can't even transport this feeling. You notice and feel that it's fake.

Bill Kaulitz: Tom and I went to school like this.

Tom Kaulitz: Exactly, we always looked like this. We always run around, like we also run around on stage. I almost said that we also dress like this in private, but there's no private life left, that's why you can't measure it. But in the past it was like this.

MOPO: When did you last enjoy the freedom of not being known?

Bill Kaulitz: When we were in the US for the first time, at the beginning of 2008. We went out without Bodyguards, which was cool, but at the same time you think: "Somehow I want the people here to know our Music and recognize the band". You're always a bit torn between those two thoughts.

MOPO: So, you're living a life thats humanoid?

Bill Kaulitz: It's already been our way of life since we were young. Of course it reaffirms the life that we're living now, because it's not normal. And you always get to feel this.

Tom Kaulitz: We grew up in the deepest province. We never felt normal, we always felt humanoid. Even today there are just a few places left where you feel familiar, and can relax. Because there are just a few moments, where it's possible for you to come down. Actually, we get the feeling of familiarity only at home. We are at home on about 20 days in a year. Apart from that, you feel unfamiliar in every place that you visit. In a lot of situations you don't even know, what you lost there.

MOPO: Don't you worry about the fact, that this life in a "cage" could have similar effects on you like on other celebrities?

Bill Kaulitz: When I notice that artists are dependent on pills or have a depression, I can probably understand them more than outsiders who aren't stuck in such a life. I'm just incredibly happy that I have Tom and that we can support each other. I always have a family member with me, like this. And we're together as a Band since almost 10 years and know each other very well. It's probably a lot harder for someone like Britney Spears and other Solo-Artists.

MOPO: How big is the chance for you, to meet the girl of your dreams in a super market?

Bill Kaulitz: You always hope that this will happen. I always say: Actually it's the only reason to get up in the mornings! You want to be loved and to find your true love, everything else doesn't make any sense! We have our Family and Friends, which only get more important for us. But of course I hope that love will happen. Even though I also know, that it's the most unrealistic thing, that could happen right now. In the past 5 years, since our career as Tokio Hotel began, I didn't have any relationships, nothing in this direction. But I still hope for a big coincidence to happen.

MOPO: Were you able to get in touch with some Hollywood Beauties while you recorded in LA?

Tom Kaulitz: To be honest, there's no shortage when it comes to Telephone numbers. I have so many in my mobile - I couldn't even call that many women on a day.

Bill Kaulitz: The problem is, that you can't get to know each other. Everything is superficial, and it's over so fast. A lot of people think that you hang around at Events, but it's not true. Everyone has his own schedule, and when the cameras are gone, everyone runs back into their own wardrobe. It's never truly profound.

1st guy: Can I have a question? He's coming from a contest... like a talent show...

7 years ago he went to this contest after losing a bet about a girl, but he already had his band, he got into the contest only because of the lost bet. He wasn't interested in the contest, he didn't went to be a solo-artist he prefered playing with his band.


2nd guy: But how do they make their songs, who writes them?

Since they were seven years old the two of them (the twins) started writing songs. Nowadays they write them with their producers...

1st girl: What do you like? (as in music I guess)

Right now they don't have time to listen to music
Tom: *pointing at Georg* He likes David Hasselhoff!
Dreadguy starts singing to a David Hasselhoff's song.
Bill: Kings of Leon, Aerosmith, The Gossip...
(Lol, the translator got confused and almost said Sex Pistols XD)

TH asks who is the favorite in the show?
A girl: it depends, it's different from week to week, in base of what song they are performing...

Bill: it works like that in Germany too, but at the end everyone gets in a fight (I guess Bill is referencing to DSDS?)
They say they don't fait and Bill is like "Nein?O.o"

Tom: who of the boys had most female fans?

Dreadguy: *pointing at Damiano* adult women likes him.

2nd girl: what do they think about this kind of show?

A talent show is a way to breakthrough. He says he understands the concept, but they were lucky because they found each other. He likes this concept more (as a group put together by their own choice), nowadays to make music and get somewhere you have to pass over something like this just to have a chance to become famous

Curly boy: What have they done? How do they get so much success?

They were lucky. He says one of the producers found them in their village. They've made the first album. Tom mentions they have changed some producers to find the ones that worked the best with them and the big success came during the summer break.

Bill&Tom: who's the favorite for winning the show so far?

They say they don't know.

Bill: Who is a band of you?

They points at the various groups (there are only two more group).
The girl-group are all sisters. Someone mentions the word twins.

Band: What are you performing tonight?
The guys says what they are performing.

Who plays any struments?
A girl plays violins, someone says drums.

Bill: Any of you have a super-interesting question for us?

Dreadguy: What do you want to say in your songs?

They don't have a specified message, but they want to entretain people through the music and have fun. Make them happy with their song. There's not just one big message.

Tom: It is not a hardship..you take it with plessure..we love to do it...

G: I am always a beneficiary if you are on my show...the girls even take my autograph, because they know i am going to see the original bill...and all of them want to join us on the couch....wait a minute...the one girl...the hair ...i want to see it again...

Bill: Yes...i saw it too...ja this one

G: Yes...that is the real one...but there was another girl...her hair was architecturally designed a bit different....could you please...there...this one..for example...

Bill: Not bad...

G: Previously..this was like B52...oh..she can look only with one eye...now...

M.H.: But she is here because of the secretary..

Bill. No..that is absoluty not true..our roots are obviously in Germany...i guess...there is nothing that could drift us away ..our families and our friends are here...and especialy the fans from day one....we would never ever leave Germany...in no way.

G: Now the fans are happy...and also you still have a steady job here...right...you are still on the road as Arthur and the Minimoys...

Bill: Yes, I did it also on the second part...and it is in the cinemas very soon. It was fun...

G: To synchronize....ok...Gentlemen ….just one quick questions? Is he our Home-Commerce or Foreing-secretary?

G: Look...the gentlemen have done their lessons... Stay here...now we have the next bet.. You know what it is like, if girls started to sweat because of excitment during the concerts

G: But it was never a part of a bet ...are jealous of him?....he is such a pretty guy..if i take a look at him..

Tom: That sounds automatic that i am not that pretty..

G: But he is...Misses Spiegel...the joung lady is 97 years old... once you said you are also intererested in older people....he is a cute guy...without this stupid hairdo..he might look like me....

M.S.: I would be very proud...if he would be my grandson...

G: Unfortunatly he could be my grandson...you are among the few women to whom i could say..you could be my mother..

M.S. I have already 4 gread-grandchildren

G: Respect...now it is time for our sweat-bet...there is no other definition for it..ja, ja....it is not easy for you...but you are not that often in such big venues...either you make music or you leave...

Bill: Actually we always make music

G: An awesome album...

G: I have listen to it completly...and even such an old guy like me is saying ..this is truely good music

G: No..it is the truth...Now it is time for our bet..
