An Interview With BILL KAULITZ On His New Solo Project Away From Tokio Hotel!

Thanks for your time today! So, how’s 2016 been treating you so far? What were some of the highlights of 2015 for you and your music?
2016 has been a crazy busy one so far. I actually can’t believe it’s almost May but I like to be busy so it’s been pretty good so far. 2015 was an amazing year music wise. Probably the best I’ve ever had. I was touring with my band almost the entire year. We played all around the globe and shared the music with incredible people. It was an adventure. I drank a lot, I partied a lot, I worked a lot. It had the right balance. Most importantly I’ve been finishing up my first solo project including my EP which is very exciting and nerve-racking too. This year I spent most of my time setting everything up for the release. I wish I’d have a million more years for that.

Growing up, did you always want to be a musician? Can you remember the first time you realized you wanted to make music for a living?
Yes. It’s all I ever wanted to do and it was all I could think of. There was no other choice to be honest. If I wouldn’t have become a performer I would probably be dead by now. Seriously! I feel like that’s why I am even on this planet. I can’t think of any other reason. I always wanted to be a singer or a fashion designer. I have a huge passion for both. Still working on my designer career. (laughter) That didn’t really happen yet but that’s also why I am going solo now. I want to combine these worlds and do what I always wanted to do.
How do you think you have grown as a musician through the years? What has stayed the same?
I don’t know. That’s a tough one. I think we are all constantly changing. Every single step we do somehow changes and influences us. I guess the passion to be on stage stayed. What I don’t like about getting older is fear. Adults are full of it. I think as a performer you get more and more in your head about things. When I was a little 13 years old kid I just ran out there on that stage and gave my everything without thinking about shit. There was no fear. I wasn’t scared. It was just passion. A feeling! The challenge is to maintain and treasure that. That’s not easy but I want to live and perform with no fear. Just putting out there what I love. My vision and my music. That’s the essence of my solo project.
At the end of April, you released your debut single as a solo artist apart from Tokio Hotel. How does that feel? How long have you been wanting to release solo music as BILLY?
I don’t consider ”love don’t break me” as the first single. It’s more like the first project that I am doing as a solo artist. It’s more than just a song. There is a short film, a photo book and these fine art prints I am going to show at exhibitions in LA, Berlin, Paris and Milan along with the song. I’ve been working on this for quite some time. I just created and let it flow without any pressure or a master plan. I always knew that I was going to release something solo one day without knowing when I was actually gonna do it. There are just so many things I wanted to do creative wise that I can’t do with the band that made a solo project unavoidable almost. I feel very very excited about this. And vulnerable. And nervous. I am such a control psychopath. I can’t let go of anything with my work and I am very specific with the stuff I want and what I like and what I don’t so I am even more hands on with everything than with what’s going on with the band if that’s even possible. This is completely on my terms.

“Love Don’t Break Me” is a multi-media hybrid art project that includes a black and white short film, a photo book and framed art prints. Where did the inspiration for all of this come from?
It just happened in the process I guess. Sometimes I ask myself the same question and I look back and think ‘how did that happen? How did this become more than a song?’ I guess it’s just what it needed to be otherwise it would feel incomplete. I want people to experience my music together with all the other things I am passionate about. To look at it as a whole. “Love Don’t Break Me” tells a story and visuals have always been important to me. With my fashion, my videos and my stage performances. I clearly don’t see myself only as a singer songwriter.

Can you talk about putting together your debut EP, “I’m Not OK”?
It all happened last year. It started with love don’t break me. We happened to write that song and it didn’t seem to fit for Tokio Hotel and somehow I had a different vision for it so I said ”let’s put it to the side. I want to keep that for a solo thing. The song is also so personal. I had a very toxic and painful relationship that I had so much to say about but because I am such a private person with that stuff I would never just tell people about it, but I had to write about it. Get it out of my system i guess. So this whole EP is about that horrible heartbreak and the different phases you go through when you get your heart fucked up. I couldn’t put that on a Tokio Hotel record. This is really just about me.

Can you elaborate on why you feel fashion is an extension of your music? How do the two things work together?
I guess it is different for everyone. For me I never just saw myself as a singer. I wanted to perform. Put on a show. Take people on an adventure. Entertain them! I can’t sit with a guitar and play dreamy songs at a bonfire. That’s just not who I am. I loved fashion my entire life. When I was in school I started to sketch my own designs. Sew my own t-shirts and pants cause I felt like there wasn’t something that fit my personality out there and they didn’t have stuff for boys that I liked. My heart was always rebellious. I hate the norm. Fashion and music is freedom for me. In my world they don’t go without each other. To tell what I want to tell with my music I need the right outfit. It supports and underlines, the message, words and the feeling. Fashion and music are both an attitude towards life.
How will you be balancing your work as a solo artist and your work with Tokio Hotel?
Good question. I don’t know! I haven’t really thought about that. I think it will figure itself out. I am not worried about that. This is just the beginning so we’ll see.
Who are some of your favorite musicians? Who would you love to collaborate with in the future?
Sadly some of the people I loved are dead. David Bowie is one of them. He was my childhood hero but I like so many. I love Depeche Mode and Robyn. A song with her would be cool. I really wanna work with Madeon or Sbtrkt. The list goes on. There are so many.
At the end of the day, what do you hope is the message of your music? What do you hope fans take away from your songs?
I hope it gets to them and they can relate to it and incorporate into their lives. I hope they cry, smile and dance to it. That’s what I really want.

Face-to-Face: Bill Kaulitz "Ich liebe Mode und Fotografie"

Bill Kaulitz ist zurück. Als Billy veröffentlicht er am 20. Mai seine neue EP “I’m not okay”. Im Zuge der ersten Song-Auskupplung “Love don’t break me” stellte Bill sein Multi-Media-Projekt auch in Berlin vor. Teil dieses Projekts sind ein Kurzfilm, ein Fotobuch und Fotodrucke.

Wir haben die Möglichkeit genutzt und Bill bei seiner Buch-Veröffentlichung und der dazu gehörigen Ausstellung in der Seven Star Gallery Berlin ein paar Fragen gestellt.

Herzlichen Glückwunsch zu deinem neuen Projekt. Was steht hinter dem Entschluss ein Solo-Projekt mit eigener CD, Foto-Ausstellungen und Buch zu starten? Was diente dir als Inspiration? Das ist irgendwie alles ganz organisch im kreativen Prozess entstanden. Ich habe nicht groß geplant! Als der erste song der EP, love don’t break me, entstanden ist, fühlte es sich für mich sofort wie ein soundtrack an. in meinem Kopf hab ich immer einen Film dazu gesehen. Wir haben den Song aber letztendlich nie irgendwo platziert und die Geschichte des Songs ist auch zu persönlich, um ihn einfach für eine beliebige Produktion zu vergeben. Meine engen Freunde Shiro Gutzie und Davis Factor haben dann vorgeschlagen meinen eigenen Kurzfilm zum Song zu produzieren und ich war natürlich sofort dabei. Eins führte dann zum Anderen: Fotos, Prints, Buch… wir inspirieren uns alle gegenseitig. Ich habe bei meinem ganzen Solo-Projekt nur mit Freunden gearbeitet; Menschen, die mir etwas bedeuten und die mich künstlerisch wachsen lassen. Ich wusste außerdem immer, dass ich keine "normalen" Musik machen wollte; das langweilt mich! Ich bin kein singer-songwriter, der mit Gitarre am Lagerfeuer sitzt -- Ich liebe es zu performen, die Show, Mode, Film und Fotografie. All diese Leidenschaften und Träume will ich in meinem Solo-Projekt leben.
Deine CD kommt am 20. Mai raus, heute launchst du separat dein Foto-Buch. Wie entstand die Idee, neben der Musik auch diesen Bildband herauszugeben? Wie steht er mit deiner neuen CD in Verbindung? Man hat heute ja nur noch sehr selten die Möglichkeit tolle Shootings zu machen. Selbst die ganz großen Magazine haben immer kleinere Budgets und nur selten kann man mit seinem absoluten Traum-Team eine Fotostrecke machen, die man auch selbst richtig geil findet. Ich liebe Mode und Fotografie; neben dem Singen und Performen war das immer mein ganz großer Traum. Fast alle Songs und die EP werden nur digital veröffentlicht. Das finde ich eigentlich total schade, aber so ist das heute nun mal. Da ich Regeln aber nicht mag, dachte ich, ich mache einfach eine Vinyl -- ganz old school nur als Sammlerstück. Dann hatte ich die Idee als Hülle einen Bildband zu machen, mit Fotografien die meine Musik begleiten und unterstreichen. Für mich gehören Musik, Mode und Fotografie einfach zusammen. Ich wollte diese Welten in einem Projekt verbinden, weil sie sich gegenseitig befruchten und sie alle meine große Liebe sind.

Dein Buch und die dazugehörigen Foto-Ausstellungen werden in Los Angeles, Berlin, Paris und Mailand präsentiert! Wieso hast du dich für diese Städte entschieden und was gefällt dir besonders an Berlin? Ich habe mir die größten Fashion und Musik Städte der Welt ausgesucht. Es gibt natürlich noch viele mehr, aber ich wollte erst mal anfangen, um zu schauen, wie es sich anfühlt. Es ist ja das erste Mal, dass ich so etwas mache. Mit all diesen Städten habe ich eine lange Verbindung. Sie haben mich inspiriert und mich zu demjenigen gemacht, der ich heute bin. Ohne sie gäbe es wahrscheinlich keine Fotos und kein Buch. Gerade berlin und Deutschland allgemein sind natürlich extrem wichtig für mich und zu Berlin habe ich eine besonders große Liebe. Es fühlt sich einfach nach zu Hause an, auch wenn ich schon seit sechs Jahren nicht mehr in Deutschland lebe. Jedes mal, wenn ich zurück komme, merke ich wie sehr ich es vermisse und wie toll und voller Leben diese Stadt ist. Berlin vibriert und bewegt sich ständig. Es ist international, laut, schön und dreckig. Jedes mal, wenn ich hier bin, gefällt es mir besser. Ich glaube wir werden die Ausstellung jetzt noch verlängern und in andere Länder und Städte bringen. Ich denke an New York, Mexico City und Moskau.
Du bist durch deine Karriere sehr viel in der Welt herumgekommen. Welcher Ort gefällt dir am besten und warum? Das kann ich nicht sagen. Ich liebe reisen und ich liebe die Welt. Das schlimmste für mich ist Stillstand. Ich war noch nie sehr lange an einem Ort. Mein Bruder und ich ziehen ständig um. Das bedeutet Freiheit für mich. Wir sind jetzt schon seit sechs Jahren in LA und ich denke es wird Zeit, bald mal wieder etwas anderes zu erleben. Wir spielen gerade mit dem Gedanken, nach Indien oder Thailand auszuwandern. Wir können ja von überall arbeiten. Ich will es nutzen, dass wir nicht an einen Ort oder eine Stadt gebunden sind. Lieblingsstädte habe ich natürlich trotzdem. New York, Paris und Rom --Italien liebe ich sehr. Nicht nur wegen des Essens, sondern auch, weil ich die Menschen unglaublich schön finde -- von Innen und von Außen.

Du warst Gast auf der Fashionshow von lala Berlin, bei der die Herbst/ Winter Kollektion 2016 vorgestellt wurde. Was ist deine Verbindung zu der Marke, was persönlich gefällt dir am besten? Der Spirit! Ich liebe Leyla sehr. Uns verbindet dieser freie, rebellische Geist -- die Leidenschaft für die Dinge, die wir tun. Ich sehe all das in Leylas Arbeit und das finde ich toll. Das ist nicht selbstverständlich und auch nicht immer einfach. Es gibt viele kreative Menschen, die große Probleme haben, ihr Herz und ihren Spirit auf ihre Arbeit zu projizieren und zu zeigen. Es gehört viel Mut dazu und man macht sich verletzlich. Bei lala Berlin sehe ich Leyla und ich halte sie außerdem für sehr kreativ und talentiert. Ich habe eine große Bewunderung für Modeschöpfer. Das ist neben der Musik, mein Traumberuf.

Dein Look hat sich über die ganzen Jahre sehr verändert. Wie würdest du deinen Stil / deinen Look heute beschreiben? Das finde ich total schwer zu beantworten. Ich glaube andere können das vielleicht besser als ich; Worte für sich selbst zu finden, ist immer irgendwie schwierig. Wenn ich ein Wort finden müsste, wäre es wahrscheinlich "selbstbewusst’’! Auch in der Mode ist mir Freiheit am Wichtigsten. Mode ist für mich ein Lebensgefühl, eine Verlängerung meiner Persönlichkeit und meiner Gefühle. Ich kleide mich immer so, wie ich den Tag erleben will. Habe ich ein wichtiges Business Meeting, bei dem ich Entscheidungen für Bereiche treffen muss, die mir eigentlich nicht liegen, kleide ich mich sehr selbstbewusst. Da gehe ich an meinen Schrank und greife meine Lieblings-j.mendel high waisted hose mit weitem bein, zusammen mit einem klassischen weißen, gekrempelten Lagerfeld Hemd mit schwarzen Seiden-Hosenträgern und meinem Lieblings-Saint Laurent Schuh. Über die Schulter würde ich mir einen bodenlangen schwarzen schweren Vintage-Mantel schmeißen und beim Verlassen meines Hauses hätte ich das Gefühl, nichts kann mich Heute umhauen. Wenn ich zum Beispiel eine Nacht durchgefeiert habe und komplett durchhänge, aber wichtige Termine habe, kleide ich mich meistens komplett weiß. Ich lasse mich aber auch von meinem Kleiderschrank inspirieren: Ich laufe morgens an all meinen Stücken vorbei und lasse meine Stimmung entscheiden. Manchmal entdecke ich Sachen, die ich noch nie getragen, oder ganz vergessen habe. Ich brauche auf jeden fall die Veränderung und die passiert ganz automatisch. Ich plane nicht. Ich liebe es mich zu verändern. Mode macht mich glücklich; es geht nur um das Gefühl.
Was bedeutet Mode für dich? Leben, Freiheit, Selbstbewusstsein, Persönlichkeit
Dein aktuelles Projekt zeigt, wie sehr du dich entwickelt hast. Was denkst du aus heutiger Sicht über die Zeit von Tokio Hotel und deine Entwicklung? Ich denke, dass ich immer das gemacht habe, was ich in dem Moment empfunden habe. Die Musik, die Mode, es war immer ich! Ich war immer authentisch. Natürlich würde ich manche Songs so nicht mehr schreiben und viele Dinge nicht mehr tragen, aber das gehört nun mal dazu. Das macht mich zu demjenigen, der ich heute bin und sehr wahrscheinlich macht mich zu demjenigen, der ich heute bin und sehr wahrscheinlich schaue ich in ein paar Jahren auf heute zurück und hasse diese hose, die ich trage; aber so ist das Leben. Das ist ein Teil von mir. Wir bewegen und verändern uns jede Sekunde. Stillstand ist der Tod. ich bin in der Öffentlichkeit groß geworden; die Menschen konnten mir zusehen, wie ich Fehler gemacht habe -- im leben, in der Mode, in der Musik. Ich war 15 als mein erster Song rauskam und das fühlt sich an, wie ein anderes Leben, aber wer kann sich denn heute noch mit seinem 15 jährigen ich identifizieren?
Was sind deine Pläne für die Zukunft? Ich möchte unbedingt noch mehr in Richtung Mode machen. Eine eigene Kollektion, vielleicht eine ganz eigene Brand. Außerdem würde ich gerne ein ganzes Album machen. Die EP war toll und ein guter Testlauf und ich glaube ich bin bereit ein Album zu machen. Außerdem will ich unbedingt einen Nachtklub eröffnen. Nur Dinge machen, die ich liebe und die mir Spaß machen -- das ist alles worum es für mich geht und was wirklich zählt.

Эксклюзивное предпрослушивание мини-альбома проходило в клубе 11 Club Room, который находится по адресу: Via Alessio di Tocqueville 11, 20154, Милан, Италия

- Регистрация началась в 20:00, а предпрослушивание - в 21:00 (время по Москве).
- В этом клубе было примерно 200 фанаток. Может даже немного больше. Половина фанатов стоят, остальные сидят на диванчиках. Все надеются, что их переведут в другую комнату. Билл приехал с опозданием, потому что задержался на автограф-сессии, пытаясь подписать как можно больше книг и карточек и сделать селфи с фанатами. Видео LDBM показывали на большом экране. В клубе была дюжина парней-фанатов. Остальные - девушки самых разных возрастов. Фанаты не могли сначала сходить в туалет или даже пройти мимо туалетов, потому что туда пошёл справить свою малую нужду Билл. Он был с фанатами, когда проигрывали мини-альбом, подпевал сам себе и наблюдал за реакцией фанатов. Каждый раз, когда заканчивалась очередная песня с мини-альбома, фанаты аплодировали, а Билл посылал им воздушные поцелуи. Это было мило! От Билла пахло розовой туалетной водой.

- 1st Q was abt how Bill can firgive sb who hurt him. He said w/ friends hurt him he forgive easy bc being "angry makes you ugly" Bill then said forgiving the person who caused the heartbreak has been much harder and he is still working on it

- Bill's fav pic in the book is the 1 where the girl smokes.wasnt supposed to be in the book, taken during a break, but he liked it so much

- His other fav pic is the 1 where he & the girl almost kiss. It was taken w/ they just met, BEFORE the shoot. They said hi & Davis Factor said " get closer, ger closer" and then took the photo

- Bill said the girl was so good and so into the shoot bc she had just been through asimilar heartbreak just weeks ago

- B's fav part of LDBM is the 1st line bc it sets the tone of the whole song aid it's that one and 'you really messed me up' because this is his worst break up ever

- Bill says the whole EP is soooo personal, every line, every word and is adiary of his relationship

- Bill said this week has been fun but very,very exhausting for him. He said Berlin event was sooo fun

- Q: when Bill creates a song, how does he know when its for TH or for Billy? When did he start the solo project? LDBM was 1st When Tom & he did it in the studio,he felt it was so different fr TH. he cant have 5 songs abt HIS heartbreak on a TH CD he said he is way more into pop music than the rest of the bandmembers so this songs fit him betyer than TH

- Bill said he loves Robyn. He said he is also currently super into Rationale & that we should look it up. He's been listening to him all day

- Bill writes all his lyrics in his phone (on the note pad or recording his voice). He said he hopes nobody ever will get hold of his phone. Bill said he smt have a melody but no lyrics.then he just sings the melody with mumbo jumbo made-up. He calls it swedish

- A fan asked Bill if he still believes in the magic of love, he sipped his wine and jokingly said"no"

- Bill said he believes some ppl have premoniton dreams but he doesnt. he dreams a lot EVERY night & he has aLOT of nightmares smt he has long periods where he only dreams nightmares & that he hopes it is not truth dreams bc that "would suck so much"

- Sb asked what advice B has about how to heal heartbreak. Bill became speechless and was quiet for a long time and then said "I don"t know". He said he is still trying to heal. Only time will help. Talking to friends & family gossiping & trash talking, being angry, get drunk and smoke, watch sad movies, write. But sometimes nothing helps, only time will.

- Bill believes that aliens live at the bottom of the ocean.

- Bill said you have to be lucky enough to find your soulmate. He wished all of us that luck and we said we wish it back. After fans said we wish him luck in love he said "thank you it's so cute how you guys care about me. Fans were cheering Bill on to sing & Shiro put the mic near his mouth and he was like "no no no 🙊" and told the fans to sing.

- Bill was asked if he'd ever pay tribute to Bowie or Prince by recording a cover. He said he ❤ them but he feel he can never do them justice, that whatever he would do, would never be better or equally good. U can never do it better, only differentю Bill said that he covered a George Michael song but wouldn't tell us which one. He said its nearly finished & he may or may not release it.

- Bill said that his soulmate could be anywhere, in India, in the restaurant in front of the venue, "fucking anywhere."

- A 🇩🇪 fan asked Bill how long does she have to take off work for the next tour & he said the tour will be longer than 3 weeks. New tour is going to be into parts again!

- I asked Bill whether we'll ever get the lyrics of the other songs too and he said probably after they'd release them

- I gave Bill a gift for Pumba: A jar with heartshaped cookies (especially made for dogs) by an italian Dog Bakery

- Bill burped twice (almost a third one haha) after sipping his glass of white wine. The latter was kinda coarse.

- A guy asked Bill how come they made the cassette of Devilish demo for the KOS ltd deluxe edition Bill desribed how they dug up the old demo& listened to it in his kitchen and "were crying!! We laughed so much when we heard it" Bill: "The (devilish) songs are soooo bad but cute at the same time. We were crying with laughter"

- He's so down to Earth, it's unbelievable.

- He also talkedabout how many different kinds of love there is, not just romantic. "I love my dog so much"

- A guy asked a Q +he asked 2 followups. Couldnt hear it. On the 2nd follow up Bill started laughing "OK, you are way more drunk than I am"

- After the listening session ended Bill came back and answered a handful more Qs. He pointed out. "I want really good question"

- Bill said he was tired now that the events are over and that it was a crazy week, now time to rest and move on with other things

- Подъехали почти к самым дверям, зашли внутрь за 2 сек. Билл улыбался и махал. Волосы не зализаны. Тома почти не видела.
- 100 людей за час. Меньше минуты на каждого. Было 120 книг на подпись. Когда книги закончились, Билл стал расписываться на карточках. Он хотел встретиться со всеми, кто пришел.
- Фанатка забыла подписанную книгу, Билл побежал догонять ее, чтобы отдать ей книгу.
- От Билла пахло розами.
